On the Fourth of July 2022, on the South Lawn of the White House in front of the Truman Balcony, Franz asked Maggie to marry, and, in front of 8,000 guests, she said yes!
We first met in the halls of the White House Council on Environmental Quality when Maggie was interning between her two years of grad school and Franz was working as a Deputy Associate Director in the Obama Administration. Both were otherwise involved at the time, and nothing immediately came of the initial introduction. Two years later, when Maggie was working for NextGen Climate in San Francisco, they again ran into each other at the Clean Energy Ministerial and enjoyed a breakfast and afternoon hanging out, but still no fireworks. That fall, the two again ran into each other at a Yale happy hour in San Francisco and Maggie asked Franz to help her plan a work trip to New Haven where Franz had started his grad school degree. In the spring of 2017, Maggie and Franz met up in New Haven after the work trip had concluded and spent a lovely evening getting to know each other in the town where they both studied. That summer, Franz took an internship in Maggie's office and they began a courtship that would last more than two years. In Fall 2019, after finishing up the Jay Inslee for President campaign, Maggie took a job as then Presidential candidate Sen. Warren's Climate Advisor, and Franz moved Raise Green, his climate investing business, to Greentown Labs, and the two moved in together in Somerville, MA. After the 2020 election, Maggie took a job in the Biden White House, and the couple moved to Washington D.C. where they live today.
Our friends, family and our environment are nearest and dearest to our hearts as people. We both have studied and worked at the nexus of climate and environmental policy and politics for our entire adult lives. We share a deep dedication to doing all we can to meaningfully reduce carbon pollution and prepare our communities for the impacts of the climate crisis that we're already seeing. This generational challenge compels us in our careers and personal lives to live with empathy, compassion, justice and a sense of service to others as we pursue sustainable lifestyles and transformational systemic changes to equitably tackle the climate crisis in our lifetimes.
We could think of no better way to celebrate our marriage than with you at Full Belly Farm in Guinda, California, one of the earliest organic farms and a true leader in sustainable and climate-resilient food systems!
In pursuit of a net-zero emissions wedding, we will be investing in climate solutions to reduce emissions from our wedding related activities. We encourage you to consider doing the same or to buy gold-standard carbon offsets which we will put in our wedding registry for you to consider. We can't wait to see you all and celebrate love together!
With love,
Maggie and Franz
